Manistee River

The Manistee River Births From The Same Moraine That Gives Rise To The
Fabled Au Sable Main Stream. Each Shares An Origin Separated Only By A Sandy Ridge Within Site Of The Other In Southwest Otsego County Near Antrim County. It's Here That These Rivers Are Linked Together As They Flow South. The Manistee Meanders West Toward Lake Michigan While The Au Sable Travels East To Lake Huron.

The Manistee's Journey Through Publicly-Owned Deward Tract Results In A
River And Subsequent Fishery Reminiscent Of A Spring-Creek. Incoming
Ground-Water And Visible Springs Produce A Crystalline Ribbon Of Cold,
Highly Oxygenated Water That Supports Wild Trout. Access Here Is Public
Until The Southern Terminus At Cameron Bridge Road. Cameron Bridge
Down-Stream To County Road Bridge 612 Offers Access Through State-Ownership Though Several Portions Of This Stretch Are Privately Held. Still Traveling South, The Manistee Gently Glides Through One Of Crawford Counties Most Beautiful Areas Gaining Flow From Goose Creek. A Public Campground Offers Access To The River In Here Also.

After The Confluence With Goose Creek, The Manistee Travels Through
Predominantly Private Property Until It Crosses M-72 And Begins Its
Decidedly Western Turn Toward Lake Michigan. The Manistee Leaves Crawford County Through Kalkaska County And The Next Major Crossing Called CCC Bridge. Much Of This Section Is Interspersed Between Private And Public Ownership. As Of April 1st, 2011, Special Regulations Will Offer Year-Around Fly Fishing Opportunities From County Road-612 Down To CCC Bridge.
